How to give power of attorney in Ethiopia online

A step by step guide with Pictures and explanations

This tutorial is intended to show the detailed steps you need to take when conferring a power of attorney to an individual in Addis Ababa and Diredawa, Ethiopia.

The process to give Power of attorneys in other cities in Ethiopia as well as outside Ethiopia abroad is different so this tutorial will not be applicable to those instances.

The Federal Document Authentication and Registration Agency (DARA) which is the body authorized to authenticate power of attorneys expects you to prepare and submit the power of attorney(POA)  on their website before appearing in person to one of their branches.

You should know that The current system employed by DARA in Ethiopia only allows you to submit the draft of the document you are seeking to autheniticate online thus at the end of following all the steps included in the tutorial you would still need to go to the nearest branch of DARA to get an official authenticated copy.

The DARA requires you to bring valid identifications and other documents  to authenticate power of attorneys, You may look at some of the requirements by clicking here.

Now lets see how you can prepare and submit a Power of Attorney, for the purposes of this tutorial we will prepare a power of attorney in English

Step 1: Go to the official page of DARA

Go to  http://www.dars.gov.et:8080/Account/Login

Log in as guest,

You can create a user account by signing up with your email and phone number but it is not necessary unless you want to edit and reuse the Power of attorney you prepared
at a later time.

Change language to English if you want the power of attorney to be in English otherwise you can login in as guest in the default Amharic version and the power of attorney will be in Amharic.

The website allows you to prepare General representation, Specific Representation, family representation as well as attorney representation, pick whichever one you want from the side bar.

If you want to include the power to sell, buy or administer a specific type of movable or immovable property in the power of attorney you should choose Fullgeneral Representation from the sidebar.

Step 2: Fill in Grantor Details

Select Customer type depending on the type of grantor.

Pick Individual if the grantor is giving the power of attorney in his/her personal capacity. In such cases the grantor is required to present a valid identification when they appear in person.

You should select organization if the power of attorney is intended to be given to a person so he/she can act on behalf of a duly established company or organization.

You may select Grantee or Guardian as customer type if applicable, Make sure you can present required documentation proving you have the authority to confer those powers before proceeding.

After selecting the Customer type Proceed to fill in all the details of the grantor. (The title entry is usually problematic in the English version of the website , you can select “MSS” for the title field if you can’t find an appropriate title.

Additionally while Ethiopian residents are expected to fill in their addresses in full including sub city, woreda etc as it appears in their identification cards, Foreigners residing abroad can tick the “foreigner” box in address and enter Passport Number in the space where it says Other Address.

Once you finish filling in the granter details Click save and enter details of the representative. You may click Add another grantor before proceeding if the number of persons giving the power of attorney is more than one.

Similarly you may add other representatives on the next page.

You should know that Attorney Representation requires you to input the full name and address of the attorney along with his/her attorney licence number.

If you  chose fullgeneral representation there would be an additional tab titled “property” where you can input details of the specific property that is subject of the power of attorney.

Step 3: Input the Rights and Powers you want to give to your representative.

If you want to limit the validity of the power of attorney you prepared for a specific period of time, you may do so by using the calendar in the next page. Alternatively not selecting this portion will imply the POA is given for an indefinite time period.

You may then select each of the powers and rights you want to confer to your representative by selecting the checkbox beside the list of powers included in the page. If you want to give additional powers or the rights you want to confer is not included in the list you may enter new powers in the blank space at the bottom of the page.

Make sure the powers you add are framed in similar ways as the ones listed on the website eg. to apply and receive divorce certificate, to acquire medical records from Tikur Anbesa Hospital etc.

Save your entry and click Next after you finish.

Step 4: Finalize your POA

Once you finish selecting and saving the rights given to the representatives click “Service Request” tab and click “Print Confirmation”

Double check that Names, addresses, property information and rights included in the power of attorney are correct. (You may return and edit any of the entries before leaving the website)

If everything is correct you can either save the file in PDF format or print it directly.

The  POA prepared by employing the above steps can be authenticated at any DARA branch office when grantor presents a printed copy of the service request with valid identification and appropriate documentation where applicable. You should note that the service number is only valid for 15 Days from the date of preparation.
